FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — During the weekly SEC coaches’ teleconference Wednesday, one reporter asked Arkansas coach Bret Bielema why wide receiver Tyrie Cleveland’s decision to sign with Florida “(struck) such a chord with you.”
“I don’t know that it did, but maybe you know something more than I do,” Bielema replied. “I think on signing day you obviously get excited about the ones you win and the ones that get away.”
Cleveland — who was the 33rd-best overall recruit in the 2016 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings — was committed to Houston before taking official visits to TCU, Florida and Arkansas in the final month before signing day.
He ultimately signed with the Gators and as a true freshman, has caught 7 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown this season.
“Obviously you wish them good luck, but I think it may be a moment when coaches wear recruiting on their sleeve on that one and every year that is kind of how it works out,” Bielema continued.
“But I credit a very good effort by all coaches they were involved. He is a very good player that we felt strongly about and wanted in our program as well.”
