Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook. In this edition, we discuss the Hogs’ newest commit, a decision date for a top target and a stellar championship performance from a 2018 signee.
Arkansas QB commit KJ Jefferson has Friday to remember
Arkansas 2019 quarterback commit KJ Jefferson announced his pledge to the Razorbacks shortly after noon CT Friday. After taking some time to celebrate with his family and meet with media outlets, Jefferson quickly shifted his attention to becoming a recruiter for the Hogs.
Within two hours of his announcement, he already had reached out to two of Arkansas’ other top 2019 targets — running back Eric Gray and wide receiver Dylan Wright. Those two, both of whom are 247Sports composite 4-star recruits, are at the top of Jefferson’s list to sway toward Arkansas. He’s also keeping an eye on 4-star wide receivers Shamar Nash and Trey Knox as he looks to bring some future receiving targets with him to Fayetteville.
Jefferson’s busy Friday wasn’t done following his commitment and recruiting work, though. That evening, he led North Panola (Sardis, Miss.) in a spring scrimmage. He threw an 80-yard touchdown pass on his first play of action, according to the Southern Sentinel.
Jefferson added another touchdown pass and had more than 100 yards through the air by the end of North Panola’s two-quarter scrimmage against Shannon (Miss.). He also had 2 rushing touchdowns — including a 40-yard score — while facing Ripley (Miss.) for two quarters. His second rushing score even elicited a Hog call from the North Panola fans.
Jefferson (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) is a 3-star prospect and the top quarterback recruit in the class from Mississippi. Considering his offer list and impressive junior season, it wouldn’t be a surprise for him to receive a ratings bump from the main recruiting outlets in the near future. He pledged to the Hogs over offers from Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and several other Power 5 programs.
As a junior at North Panola, he passed for 3,028 yards and 39 touchdowns. He also ran for 1,395 yards and 11 touchdowns.
WR target Lance Wilhoite set to announce commitment decision in July
Wide receiver Lance Wilhoite could become one of Jefferson’s future targets if he chooses the Hogs in late July. He recently announced that’s when he expects to announce a commitment, though he hasn’t set and exact date just yet.
Wilhoite (6-foot-3, 175 pounds) is a 4-star recruit and the No. 1 prospect from Tennessee in the 2019 class. He attends Franklin Road Academy in Nashville. Arkansas wide receivers coach Justin Stepp and offensive coordinator Joe Craddock recently stopped by the school to check in on the prized receiving target.
An unofficial visit to Arkansas in late February significant boosted the Hogs’ chances at landing his commitment. He’s expected to be back on campus for an official visit in June. Arkansas is among the programs recruiting him the hardest, along with Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Louisville and Tennessee.
“Not going to lie, I liked Arkansas a lot after the visit,” Wilhoite said a couple of weeks after his trip to Fayetteville. “I want to go back. That put [the Razorbacks] higher on my list after that visit.”
The exact date for Wilhoite’s next Arkansas visit is not yet set. The Razorbacks are hosting several official visitors June 7-9 and June 13-15. Either of those weekends would likely be an ideal time to have Wilhoite make his return trip.
ICYMI: Arkansas QB signee Connor Noland pitches team to state title
Arkansas quarterback signee Connor Noland ended his illustrious high school athletic career Saturday. He did so by leading Greenwood (Ark.) High School to a baseball state championship at the Razorbacks’ Baum Stadium.
The two-sport standout tossed a complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts as Greenwood earned a 4-0 victory. He allowed just 2 hits.
