DETROIT — Daniel Gafford’s freshman season at Arkansas came to end Friday afternoon with a loss to Butler in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Now that the season is in the books, Gafford has a decision to make. Will he return for a second season in Fayetteville or will he pursue his options at the professional level?
The answer is not likely to come any time soon. Following the loss Friday, Gafford said the opportunity to turn pro hadn’t crossed his mind all season. It’s also not what his thoughts immediately shifted to with the Hogs’ season over.
“Right now, that’s out of the discussion,” Gafford said. “I’m just trying to worry about my guys, the seniors that are leaving.”
Gafford is slotted as the No. 19 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, according to the latest projection from CBS Sports. This draft is expected to be stacked with post players, though. Seven of the 18 picks before him are post players. That includes three of the top four picks.
In 35 games a freshman, Gafford averaged 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds. He also had 76 blocks, averaging better than 2 per game.
