Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook. This time, we discuss new kicker commit Blake Mazza, a potential 4-star visitor and more.
Kicker commit Blake Mazza draws Cole Hedlund comparisons
Arkansas landed a preferred walk-on commitment from 2017 kicker Blake Mazza on Tuesday.
Mazza expects to compete for playing time this fall at any kicking specialist assignment. The Plano (Texas) High School prospect is particular looking to add competition at placekicker. That’s a spot junior Cole Hedlund has worked as the starter this spring. Like Mazza, Hedlund is from the Dallas area.
“I train right now with Cole Hedlund,” Mazza told SEC Country in a recent phone interview. “Me and him train a lot. We have the same kicking coach (former Oklahoma kicker Scott Blanton). We’re pretty good friends. We know each other. We talked a lot on my visit. It’s a good friendship competition there so it’ll be fun.”
Blanton has compared Mazza and Hedlund on several occasions, first doing so when Mazza was a high school freshman.
Tennessee offers Hogs commit Byron Hanspard II
Arkansas cornerback commit Byron Hanspard II has received an offer from Tennessee.
A 6-foot-1, 180-pound 4-star recruit according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, Hanspard is now nearing 20 offers. A few of those came after he announced his pledge to the Razorbacks last month.
Hanspard is among 4 current commits — all 4-star prospects — in Arkansas’ 2018 recruiting class.
Report: 4-star Ronnie Perkins wants to see Arkansas
A 4-star prospect, Perkins told the site he is trying to plan a trip to the Hogs’ April 29 spring game. Otherwise, he plans to visit this summer when Lutheran North is in Arkansas for a 7-on-7 tournament.
“The coaches, I have a nice relationship with them but we are still talking,” Perkins told Rivals. “I really want to get on campus and talk to them.”
Perkins is 6-foot-4, 245 pounds and has more than 30 offers with Arkansas, LSU, Michigan and Oklahoma among them. His brother, Ronnell Parker, started 4 games last season at cornerback for Missouri.
CB target LaDarrius Bishop does it all in track meet
Arkansas cornerback target LaDarrius Bishop is known for being a standout athlete at Ashdown (Ark.) High School.
Bishop put a few of his gifts on display at the Coca-Cola Relays in Nashville, Ark., on Tuesday. He finished second in the 100-meter dash (10.9 seconds), first in the 200 (22.2) and first in the long jump (21 feet, 7 inches).
A 3-star recruit who is 6-foot, 195 pounds, Bishop recently visited Arkansas for a spring practice. The Hogs are considered his favorite, and he holds offers from Iowa State, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State and others.
