From one Allen to another.
Arkansas coach Bret Bielema announced that junior quarterback Austin Allen, the younger brother of three-year starter Brandon Allen, would be the Razorbacks’ starter to open the 2016 season.
Allen performed well in a 100-play scrimmage last Saturday, completing 15-of-18 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns, and he has done enough to win the job.
“The fifth Arkansas edge is we EARN EVERYTHING,” Bielema told ArkansasRazorbacks.com’s Patrick Pierson. “That is why today I announced to the team that Austin Allen is our starting quarterback.”
The older Allen is Arkansas’ all-time leader in touchdown passes (64), but the younger Allen is short on game experience with just 19 career passes for 118 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
Allen will get a chance to follow in his brother’s footsteps when Arkansas opens the season against Louisiana Tech on Sept. 3.
