The Arkansas baseball team hasn’t lost a postseason game to Oral Roberts in 12 years. Now isn’t the time to break that streak.
Arkansas and Oral Roberts are set to begin the Fayetteville Regional on Friday afternoon at Baum Stadium. Dave Van Horn, coach of the top-seeded Razorbacks, chose to play the day game Friday. The winner between the Diamond Hogs and Golden Eagles will get the winner of the night game between Southern Miss and Dallas Baptist.
Van Horn’s bunch is playing with everything in its favor. Their home record (30-3) was tied with Stanford — the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament — for the best in the country. They’re practically unbeatable at Baum. Arkansas is the No. 5 overall seed nationally, which means if the Diamond Hogs get through the regional, as expected, the Super Regionals will be in Fayetteville, too.
Yes, Arkansas is even a candidate for a national title. And why not? A top-5 team in the country should be. The path begins with a familiar postseason face.
Oral Roberts visited Baum Stadium last year for the Fayetteville Regional, too. Arkansas beat the Golden Eagles twice to end their season. Before that, Arkansas beat Oral Roberts in the first game at the Stillwater Regional in 2015. In all, this will be the 104th meeting between the two teams. Arkansas has played no one else in school history that many times.
The Golden Eagles play in the Summit League. More on the point, they dominate the Summit League. Oral Roberts has made the NCAA Tournament every year but three straight (from 2012-2014) since 1998. They’re no strangers to the stage.
They also don’t often get far in regional play. This year’s team, too, isn’t widely considered one of the better ones in recent memory. Oral Roberts enters the tournament with the third-lowest RPI of any of the 64 teams.
That doesn’t mean Van Horn is going to slouch. He chose junior right-hander Blaine Knight, a potential top-three-round pick in next week’s MLB draft and a second-team All-SEC pitcher, to start. The first game is arguably the most important, and Van Horn selected his ace.
Expect a packed Baum Stadium, as usual. Come early. Bring sun block.
