FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks podcast. On this episode, we talked about wide receiver Jared Cornelius’s hamstring injury, the still evolving 3-4 defensive system, running back Maleek Williams and more.
SEC Country launched the Borderline Erotic Podcast on Aug. 29, 2016. It is named after the colorful way Arkansas coach Bret Bielema described how he felt after beating Texas in the 2014 Texas Bowl.
Here is a quick rundown on some of the topics we discuss on this, the 148th episode of the Borderline Erotic Podcast.
Cornelius taking it easy
We open this episode with the breaking news that senior wide receiver Jared Cornelius is taking it easy after injuring his hamstring. Considering how important Cornelius is to the Arkansas offense in 2017, should he be out there at all this spring after this injury? It seems best to just let him recover and let the younger, less-experienced wideouts get some extra practice time.
Some defenders still moving around
Arkansas is still tinkering with its new 3-4 defensive scheme. After practice Thursday, we learned that Dwayne Eugene, Karl Roesler and Dee Walker are all working at slightly different positions this week.
But, as defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads told reporters Thursday, that’s what this time of year is all about.Spring time is a time to experiment and as we install this defense, part of our objective is trying to find out where guys fit the best. And that’s what the last three weeks and seven remaining
“Spring time is a time to experiment and as we install this defense, part of our objective is trying to find out where guys fit the best,” Rhoads said. “And that’s what the last three weeks and seven remaining practices will be spent figuring out.”
Maleek Williams impressing
Running backs coach Reggie Mitchell raised some eyebrows Thursday when he told reporters that true freshman and early enrollee Maleek Williams has been so impressive this spring that coaches are going to have to find a way to get on the field in 2017.
Arkansas returns its two leading rushers next season in Rawleigh Williams III and Devwah Whaley, but Bielema is happiest when he’s got three capable guys in the backfield getting touches. Could Maleek Williams be that third guy? He’ll have competition from fellow true freshman Chase Hayden when he arrives on campus this summer.
