Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook. In this edition, we discuss a linebacker target back in play for the Hogs, an upcoming list of top schools to watch for and a top target visiting elsewhere.
Arkansas LB target Zach Zimos de-commits from Cal
Arkansas is expected to be back in the mix for 2019 linebacker Zach Zimos after he recently re-opened his recruitment.
Zimos (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) is a 3-star prospect according to the 247Sports composite. He attends Travis High School in Richmond, Texas.
Cal initially landed Zimos’ commitment in late April. The Razorbacks tested his pledge to the Golden Bears when they offered Zimos a week after he’d announced his commitment. Two weeks later, Zimos decided he’d committed prematurely and stated his recruitment was back open as a result.
Missouri and Texas Tech also offered Zimos in the three-week window while he was pledged to Cal. At the time of his commitment, the Golden Bears were his only Power 5 offer.
“After talking with my family, coaches and friends, I feel that I made my decision committing to Cal too quick and believe it is best for me to open up my recruitment,” Zimos recently posted via Twitter. “Thank you to the coaches and staff for the opportunity to play football at Cal. I look forward to seeing what the future holds.”
With things changing rapidly in his recruitment over the past month, Arkansas’ efforts to become one of his top choices is paying off. The next step in the Razorbacks’ pursuit of Zimos will be getting him on campus for a visit.
Zimos had 56 tackles, 2 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries last season, according to 247Sports. He played in a safety/linebacker role for Travis as a junior.
Top 10 coming soon for Arkansas target Miles Williams
Arkansas 2019 cornerback target Miles Williams plans to announce his top-10 schools Wednesday. The Razorbacks will almost certainly be making his trimmed list.
Williams (6-foot-1, 170 pounds) is a 3-star recruit from Mansfield (Texas). He has offers from 17 FBS programs. That list includes Power 5 programs Boston College, Cal, Purdue, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt. Arkansas cornerbacks coach Mark Smith extended an offer from the Hogs in late April.
As a junior at Mansfield last season, Williams had 28 tackles and 2 interceptions. Smith and safeties coach Ron Cooper made two trips to Mansfield this spring to see Williams, including one last week. A visit to Fayetteville this summer is very likely as the Hogs surge towards the top of Williams’ options.
Arkansas CB target Markel Reed sets official visits to Texas Tech
The Hogs are among the top-4 choices for Temple (Texas) 2019 cornerback Markel Reed. Arkansas’ greatest threat to landing his commitment is likely Texas Tech. And the Red Raiders will soon have their chance at making a strong impression.
Reed (6-2, 166) will make a weekend official visit to Texas Tech beginning June 8. How that visit goes should provide him with more clarity as to where he’s leaning. The Hogs are also expected to have their chance at hosting Reed this summer. He already visited Arkansas in late March, receiving his offer from the Razorbacks at that time.
Reed — a 3-star prospect — had 27 tackles, an interception and 13 pass breakups as a junior at Temple last season.
