FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Senior Arkansas wide receiver Drew Morgan stood in front of his teammates and coaches earlier this week and admitted he was dealing with an addiction.
As the other Razorbacks stood in stunned silence, eyes bugging out of their heads, Morgan quickly added, “It’s not a bad addiction. The addiction is a positive mental mindset.”
In other words, Morgan is addicted to “juice,” a phrase that gets thrown around a lot in sports but lacks definitive meaning.
“I dug deep one night in my bed,” Morgan told reporters Wednesday. “I was like, ‘You know, maybe I should come up with a definition.’
“So the definition of ‘juice’ is, ‘a positive mental mindset.’ What are you gonna do today to get better?”
In that speech, Morgan told his teammates they shouldn’t be sponges and just soak up the juice, but should be the one providing it.
Ever since his memorable talk, Morgan said other players have come out for practice yelling, “Juuuice.”
Junior center Frank Ragnow laughed when asked about Morgan’s “juice” speech.
“He talks it up, but he backs it up,” Ragnow said. “Drew Morgan’s the same guy every single day and he makes plays every single day. He’s got that same attitude.
“It was actually a pretty dang good speech.”
Morgan — a Greenwood, Ark., native — caught 63 passes for 843 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. All were team-highs.
Asked about Morgan and “juice” at his Thursday news conference, Arkansas coach Bret Bielema gave it another name: “Druice.”
“He gave a speech, and it was mainly based on juice. … I don’t know if anybody’s got a patent,” Bielema quipped.
“He’s very consistent. I tell our players and our coaches all the time, one of the greatest traits you can have as a man is the word ‘consistent.’ … If you’re a top performer and you’re that way every day, it’s very hard for you not to have success. And that’s what Drew is.”
At one point during his interview session Wednesday, Morgan felt like the media members who were listening might not be taking him seriously.
“You all can laugh at me all you want,” he said with a grin. “Juice is it, man. Just wait and watch.”
