Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook. In this edition, we discuss outside linebacker targets, 2017 signees, commits recruiting others and more.
Four OLB targets to watch for in Arkansas’ 2017 class
Arkansas missed out on 2018 outside linebacker Thurman Geathers when he announced his commitment to Louisville on Tuesday.
With the 3-star prospect (247Sports composite ratings) off the board, the Hogs have some other options firmly on the radar. It’s a key position in the class as playmaking outside linebackers are essential to success in Arkansas’ new 3-4 scheme. The Razorbacks currently have nine commitments in the class, six on defense.
Here’s a look at four other OLBs the Razorbacks could secure:
- DaShaun White, 3 stars, Richland (North Richland Hills, Texas): White visited Fayetteville in late April and came away impressed. He’s planning to announce his commitment later this month, and has the Razorbacks among his top choices. The Hogs view White as a top priority. His commitment would put their class in great shape on defense. However, Oklahoma and Texas A&M appear to have a slight lead at this point.
- Maureese Wren, 3 stars, Horn (Mesquite, Texas): Wren is expecting to visit Fayetteville shortly after the recruiting dead period ends July 9. Arkansas offered him June 19 and has been heavily recruiting him since. It’s very likely the Hogs push to lock in his commitment when he visits, though he’s planning to wait until his birthday Sept. 27 to announce his future school.
- Fa’Najae Gotay, 3 stars, North Fort Myers (Fla.): Gotay’s offer list suggests he’s underrated. He’s a low-end 3-star prospect according to 247Sports, the only recruiting outlet to give him a rating. But he has 21 offers from programs such as Arkansas, Louisville, Missouri and Tennessee, as well as eight other Power 5 schools. If the Hogs can get him on campus for a visit, their chances to get his commitment should be strong.
- Jacob Mangum-Farrar, 3 stars, Kempner (Sugar Land, Texas): Mangum-Farrar proved he is one of the top 2018 recruits in the Houston area when he earned linebacker MVP honors at The Opening Houston regional. His offers include Houston, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Utah and Vanderbilt. The Hogs haven’t offered yet, though that could change soon.
Two 2017 signees still not on campus
Patton, a 4-star tight end, transferred from Arizona Western College. He signed in December and was initially expected to join the program in January. Paul is a 3-star linebacker from New Orleans. His arrival occurred as expected. Now that those two are on campus, 23 of the Hogs’ 25 signees in the class have enrolled.
It’s expected 4-star safety Montaric Brown will arrive at some point this month. He is working to get qualified academically. He has, however, signed with Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, so there must be at least some concern regarding his status.
Defensive tackle Melvin Johnson also hasn’t yet arrived or enrolled. There has been no word on when he may join the program.
The two blueshirts in the class — offensive lineman Ty Clary and outside linebacker Hayden Henry — have enrolled.
DL commit Emmit Gooden joining recruiting push
A few of the commitments within Arkansas’ 2018 class have shown a consistent willingness to recruit others to join them. The efforts have been led by 4-star Greenwood (Ark.) quarterback Connor Noland, whose recently been pushing 2019 quarterback Ty Evans to join the Hogs.
Linebacker commit Bumper Pool and cornerback commit Byron Hanspard II, both 4-star recruits from the Dallas area, have done much of the same with other prospects.
The latest to join in on recruiting others has been Independence (Kan.) Community College defensive tackle Emmit Gooden. The No. 3 junior college defensive tackle in the class, Gooden recently reached out to defensive end target Nicholas Fulwider to let him know the Hogs would love to have him. Fulwider is a 3-star prospect from Sandy Creek (Tyrone, Ga.). He’s planning to announce his commitment late this month. Arkansas is in contention with Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt.
