Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook. In this edition, we discuss a top target intrigued by Arkansas, another planning a second visit soon, a commit receiving an honor and more.
Arkansas an interesting option for 4-star DE John Waggoner
The allure of playing in the SEC West has Dowling Catholic (West Des Moines, Iowa) DE John Waggoner interested in Arkansas.
Waggoner (6-foot-5, 240 pounds) received an offer from the Razorbacks earlier this month. He’s a 4-star recruit and the top prospect in Iowa for the 2018 class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. His other offers include Florida, Iowa, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State and several other Power 5 schools.
“[Arkansas is] intriguing because they play in a great division,” Waggoner told SEC Country.
Waggoner is currently putting the finishing touches on his summer visit schedule. He says a trip to Arkansas “could be tough” but remains a possibility.
As a junior last season, he helped lead Dowling Catholic to the Iowa Class 4A state title. He was named a first-team all-state selection by the Iowa Newspaper Association.
4-star DT target Emmit Gooden expects to visit again soon
Independence (Kan.) Community College defensive lineman Emmit Gooden is planning to visit Arkansas again soon.
The No. 8 overall junior college prospect for 2018, Gooden visited in late April and attended the Razorbacks’ final spring practice. His return trip is expected to come this weekend. He’s visited Oklahoma and Oklahoma State since his first trip to Fayetteville.
Gooden (6-foot-4, 315 pounds) is a major target for the Hogs as they look to secure defensive linemen in the 2018 class. They signed just one — Riverside (Calif.) Community College 3-star Melvin Johnson — in the 2017 class.
Arkansas is currently believed to be among the top contenders for Gooden. He’s friends with sophomore defensive end McTelvin “Sosa” Agim, and speaks highly of defensive line coach John Scott Jr. and defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads.
In addition to this weekend, he’s previously told SEC Country he “definitely” plans to make an official visit to Fayetteville next fall.
QB commit Connor Noland named camp MVP
Arkansas commit Connor Noland was named the quarterback MVP at Rivals’ 3 Stripe Camp in St. Louis on Sunday. The camp also featured Illinois commit Coran Taylor.
Noland (6-2, 195) attended the camp less than a week removed from baseball season. A right-handed pitcher, he was on the mound for Greenwood (Ark.) in its final game last Monday. He’s committed to play both sports at Arkansas.
