FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Mike Anderson’s Arkansas men’s basketball team starts its “prove it” season Friday night at Bud Walton Arena.
The Razorbacks host Samford, from Birmingham, Ala., to kick off the 2017-18 season. Arkansas was picked to finish sixth in the SEC this year by media voters. Samford was picked to finish second in the Southern Conference by both the league’s coaches and media.
It’s called a “prove it” season because many around the team feel like the Razorbacks were underrated by being picked sixth. Some national preseason magazines ranked the Hogs as low as 10th in the SEC.
That seems like low standing for a team that returns two of its top three scorers and came within 60 seconds and some bad breaks of beating eventual national champion North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament last year.
Jaylen Barford and Daryl Macon are the biggest reasons for optimism. They both have All-SEC potential and turned down a chance at the NBA to return for their senior season. Joined by top-50 freshman Daniel Gafford on the inside, the Razorbacks are looking for a 25-win regular season.
The Razorbacks went 26-10 overall last season and 12-6 in the SEC regular season.
