Arkansas class breakdown
Ranking: No. 23 in the nation
Top targets: Devwah Whaley, Paul Ramirez, Austin Capps, Joseph Putu
Total projected signees: 23
Names to know
McTelvin Agim, DE – The five-star strong-side defensive end recruit enrolled early and will get reps in the spring to challenge for a starting spot.
Terrance Malone, OG – This JUCO offensive guard will bring experience to an offense that lost key linemen and will have a new quarterback in 2016.
Jordan Jones, WR – He comes from Smackover, Ark., but that’s not the best part. He’s 6-foot-1, fast and will be a nice addition to a wide receiver corps that got decimated with injuries last season.
De’jon Harris, LB – This was a great steal from the Greater New Orleans area. Harris is one of four linebacker commits the team needed to help fill its depth chart. And Harris, an inside backer, can fill gaps with his 6-foot, 238-pound frame.
Storylines to watch
Can Whaley produce?
The four-star running back from Beaumont, Texas, had offers from all over the South, including every major program in the Lone Star State. But he chose a Razorback program that loves to pound the ball on the ground behind big linemen. With the loss of Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams, he may see time right away.
Under the radar?
Nobody was more under the radar than Joseph Putu, who had no offers and hardly any looks just a month ago while playing cornerback for North Dakota State College of Science. The JUCO transfer should have an immediate impact in the defensive backfield.
Can the Hogs rebuild defense in this recruiting class?
Arkansas has 11 defensive recruits, mostly in the linebacker unit and defensive backfield. The Hogs gave up lots of points last season, and it’s hard to be a consistent winner in the SEC with a porous defense.
Arkansas fans still have lots of optimism because of the way the Razorbacks finished the season — winning six of their last seven, including victories over Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Missouri and a big bowl win over Kansas State. National Signing Day will be a good one for Arkansas fans, as many needs across the board will be addressed from the offensive line to a star running back to guys who can bolster the defense in the future.
