Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook. This time, we discuss the waiting game the Hogs are playing with three defensive targets, Jeremy Patton’s status and the flurry of recruiting activity for 2018.
3 major targets planning Signing Day announcements
It appears Arkansas fans will be waiting until National Signing Day on Feb. 1 to find out where three of the Razorbacks’ top remaining targets are heading.
Chevin Calloway and Brad Stewart — both 4-star cornerbacks — and 3-star defensive lineman Malik Young are all expected to make their decisions public next Wednesday. It’s possible any of the three could become a silent commit between now and then, announcing their choice to the coaches but not publicly.
Calloway (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) officially visited Arkansas last week. He is not expected to visit any other schools. It is likely he receives in-home visits from the Hogs, Ole Miss and Texas — his final three choices.
Coming off an official visit to Fayetteville last weekend, Stewart (6-0, 194) is currently on a mid-week trip to TCU. The New Orleans native will also take an official to Florida this weekend. He told SEC Country earlier this week his top choices were Arkansas, Arizona State and Florida.
Young (6-3, 285) made a mid-week visit to Arkansas a week ago. The junior college prospect is still considering the Razorbacks along with Arizona State, Florida and Missouri.
With 22 commits/signees currently in the 2017 class, landing all three would be an ideal finish for the Razorbacks. Though the waiting game can put schools in a tough spot, expect the coaching staff to leave every avenue open for all three to join the Hogs.
LB target Johnston picks UAB
Linebacker target Thomas Johnston made a stunning announcement Tuesday when he committed to UAB via Twitter.
Johnston (6-2, 215), a 3-star recruit from Spanish Fort (Ala.) High School, has long been a top target for the Razorbacks. He officially visited Fayetteville in October. Things had recently cooled off between he and Arkansas, but he still listed the Hogs in his top 3 as of Sunday. Iowa and Ole Miss were the other finalists he listed.
Ultimately, it appears the opportunity to play in front of family won out for Johnston. His older brother, Tyler, is a quarterback at UAB.
TE signee Patton releases statement to fans
Arkansas coach Bret Bielema announced last week that tight end signee Jeremy Patton would not be joining the program at the midterm as expected.
Patton’s unexpected absence certainly has been concerning to many fans. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound talent is one of the Hogs’ top additions in the 2017 class as a 4-star recruit and the No. 1 junior college tight end prospect.
On Tuesday, he released a statement via Twitter that he was unable to join the program because he failed to graduate from Arizona Western College last semester. However, he reassured fans he fully intends to arrive early this summer.

Arkansas remains active with future offers
The Razorbacks have continued to remain extremely active sending out offers in the 2018 class.
Ashdown (Ark.) High School 3-star cornerback LaDarius Bishop received one from the Hogs on Monday night. He is the No. 4 in-state prospect in the class. His former Ashdown teammate, 4-star safety Montaric Brown, is committed to the Hogs’ 2017 class.
Bishop (6-0, 180) has also reported offers from Baylor, Louisiana-Monroe and Oklahoma State. He is one of eight 2018 recruits to have been offered by the Hogs since Sunday.
Here’s the list of reported 2018 offers extended by Arkansas this week:
- LaDarius Bishop, 3-star CB, Ashdown (Ark.) High School
