ROGERS, Ark. — Arkansas coach Bret Bielema knows he sometimes has to serve as a father figure to his players and ex-players. He learned that the hard way over the weekend.
Bielema spoke to former Razorbacks offensive lineman Sebastian Tretola, after Tretola was shot in an incident at a Fayetteville night club late Saturday night/early Sunday morning.
“Verbatim when I got hold of him yesterday, I said, ‘Hey, first thing I do is hug you and the next thing I do is probably punch you, you know,” Bielema said. “Just I want him to realize what he has. So we’ll continue to work. I love the kid to death and hopefully he’ll triumph this moment.”
Tretola reportedly was at Lit Lounge just off Dickson Street when the gunfire began. No word on what started the incident or if Tretola was involved with anything other than being a bystander. Lit Lounge is the same place where former Arkansas basketball forward Jacorey Williams had his alleged incidents in 2015.
Bielema said “thankfully, he’s good” in regard to Tretola’s condition.
The incident is the second of the offseason for Tretola, who finished his college career after the 2015 season. He is currently on the Tennessee Titans roster. Bielema said he will use the situation as a teaching point to his current players.
“Anytime you’re in a situation like this, obviously you’ve got to make awareness for the individual involved. But for me, thankfully it didn’t involve anyone from our current roster,” Bielema said. “But I think it’s kind of one of those alarms that goes off in your head to kind of just make everybody aware of what potentially is out there in the world we live in today.”
No word on any details about the shooting. However, expect some to surface in the coming days and weeks.
