Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook. In this edition, we discuss an Ole Miss commit, 2018 defensive line, a recent visitor and more.
Arkansas has attention of Ole Miss DL commit Israel Antwine
Defensive tackle Israel Antwine remains committed to Ole Miss despite the resignation of coach Hugh Freeze on July 20.
Though the 2018 recruit is still pledged to the Rebels, Arkansas apparently isn’t totally out of the picture. A source close to Antwine told SEC Country on Thursday the DT is “absolutely” interested in the Razorbacks. He visited and received an offer from Arkansas in June, a couple of weeks after committing to Ole Miss. The source said the trip went great and he was “very excited” to receive the offer.
The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Antwine attends Millwood High School in Oklahoma City and is a 3-star recruit, according to 247Sports. He also holds offers from Colorado, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and other FBS programs.
Late last week, Antwine told The Oklahoman’s Scott Wright he was unlikely to make a final decision on where he stands with Ole Miss until the expected NCAA sanctions are announced.
“I was surprised to hear it, and I was disappointed,” Antwine told Wright. “It has really got me thinking. I have to look out for my future.”
Done on the defensive line?
Though Antwine has interest in Arkansas, it may not matter.
I’s unclear at this time if the Hogs even have another spot available on the defensive line in the class. It was believed Clinch County (Homerville) 3-star defensive end John Mincey claimed the third and final available spot when he committed Tuesday.
However, defensive tackle Allen Love, another Ole Miss commit, reported an offer from Arkansas on Thursday. There are conflicting reports on whether or not Love (6-3, 285) actually has an offer, but SEC Country has no reason to believe he was not offered. If Love did indeed receive one Thursday, clearly the Hogs aren’t done at the position group.
Arkansas’ plan had been to sign three defensive linemen in the class since last winter. But with 2017 defensive tackle signee Melvin Johnson failing to qualify academically, that may have opened up another spot.
There are also signs the Hogs are still pursuing DE target Nicholas Fulwider. The 3-star from Sandy Creek (Tyrone, Ga.) caught up with DT commit Emmit Gooden on Thursday night. Gooden reached out to Fulwider, which is common if schools are still pursuing a recruit.
UPDATE: SEC Country has learned Love does not have an offer from Arkansas.
OLB target Maureese Wren has good visit, now off to Colorado
Outside linebacker target Maureese Wren came away impressed with Arkansas following his visit to campus Thursday.
Wren (6-4, 215) toured the football facilities and attended the Hogs’ first practice of the season. He spoke with defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads for about 10 minutes during the early portion of practice.
The 2018 3-star from Horn (Mesquite, Texas) now has a two-day trip to Colorado planned beginning Sunday. The Buffaloes are joined by Arkansas as one of his top choices. He plans to wait until Sept. 27, his birthday, to announce a commitment.
In-state tackle Jax Gasaway to announce top 3
Tackle Jax Gasaway will announce his top three schools Friday. Though he doesn’t have an offer to have an immediate scholarship, expect Arkansas to be among those choices.
From Star City, Ark., Gasaway (6-7, 275) is a 3-star prospect. He currently has an offer from the Razorbacks to join the program as a walk-on and with a plan in place to receive a scholarship at some point. He received that opportunity from coach Bret Bielema following his participation in the Trench Hogs camp in June.
“It’s great to be able to have a chance to go play on a team that you grew up watching and everything,” Gasaway told SEC Country about Arkansas. “I’m really excited about that.”
Gasaway has immediate scholarship opportunities from Air Force, Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Marshall and Texas State.
