Senior tight end Alex Voelzke will play on Saturday after missing last week’s season opener with an injury, but you might not recognize him right away.
Voelzke, who usually wears No. 46, will rep the No. 88 on Saturday in memory of former Arkansas tight end Garrett Uekman, according to Arkansas’ Twitter account.
Uekman unexpectedly passed away in November 2011. He was a redshirt freshman on the Arkansas football team and played in nine games during the 2011 season. Arkansas now has a scholarship dedicated to Uekman, which Voelzke was awarded this season, according to a school press release.
“I am honored to receive the Garrett Uekman Memorial Scholarship,” Voelzke said in the release. “Garrett set the example for players like myself that ‘Impossible is Nothing.’”
Voelzke is a former walk-on who has become a big part of the Razorbacks’ offense, playing in all 13 games at tight end last season. He will mean a lot to Arkansas this season, but the number on his back will mean even more on Saturday.
