FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Southern Illinois basketball coach Barry Hinson was blunt Monday night when asked about the Arkansas home crowd.
“That’s not the Razorback crowd that I know,” Hinson said.
Hinson, who has been a college basketball head coach for the last 16 seasons, has coached against Arkansas in Bud Walton Arena before during his previous stop at Missouri State.
The fiery Hinson looked straight into the camera to directly address Arkansas fans and said, “But your tickets and get your butts back in this gym. This team deserves it.”
Official attendance for the game was 13,308, but that is based on tickets sold. The “estimated actual attendance” printed on the official box score was 4,270.
Asked about Hinson’s comments and the crowd size, Arkansas coach Mike Anderson agreed that he’d like to see more fans show up.
“When I walk in there, I want to see it packed,” Anderson said. “Obviously, we’ve gotta do our part, but I would love to see more fans in there. I think we’ve got a team that’s got a chance to be a dynamite team.
“We know that in this arena, when our fans are here and involved, it takes us to another level.”
Arkansas beat Southern Illinois 90-65 Monday to improve to 2-0 on the season.
