LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas appears to have a clear advantage over the competition in the pursuit to land the commitment of top 2017 in-state prospect Montaric Brown.
The 6-foot, 182-pound 4-star defensive back from Ashdown (Ark.) High School has built a very close relationship with a current member of the Razorbacks.
“I love all the coaches and I know some guys that play for them,” Brown told SEC Country on Friday. “(Freshman defensive end) McTelvin Agim and (redshirt freshman wide receiver) La’Michael Pettway, I talk to them on a daily basis. They tell me how things work up there. They tell me how the coaches coach and everything.
“I look up to (Agim). He’s like a brother to me. He comes to visit me at the house and all that. We talk a lot. If I do go to Arkansas, it’ll be big to me with him being there.”
From a recruitment standpoint, Brown and Agim have a lot in common. Agim was a coveted prospect himself with offers from many of the same programs as Brown. A 5-star recruit from Hope (Ark.) High School, Agim was also the top in-state prospect in his class.
Brown had announced on Twitter earlier this month he was ready to make his commitment. He later decided to postpone his pledge until the end of July, and told SEC Country on Friday he’s now planning to take his five official visits before making a decision.
“I’m going to push it back, because I talked to my family and we decided to let me take all my official visits to see how I like all my top choices before I make a decision,” Brown said.
Brown admits he had his mind made up when he initially announced he was ready to commit. So who was his choice at the time?
“I had one at the moment,” Brown said, “but I’m going to keep that to myself.”
He plans to make his five official visits to each of his top five schools — Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU and Oklahoma State.
