Prominent Atlanta radio host: UGA won’t advance in College Football Playoff

No. 4 Georgia (10-1) enters Black Friday’s matchup with No. 23 Georgia Tech in a position where the result is unlikely to affect its College Football Playoff path.

Only one scenario could complicate Georgia’s playoff chances.

First, Georgia would need to lose to Georgia Tech in Friday’s Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. Second, either Alabama or Texas A&M would also have to lose during rivalry weekend, pushing Georgia into the SEC Championship. Third, the Bulldogs would then need to fall in the conference title game on Dec. 6 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

If all three events happened, Georgia would enter Decision Sunday at 10-3 with its playoff hopes in serious doubt.

Not likely.

Georgia’s level of play has continued to rise as the season has progressed, heating up at the right time. Over the last three games, the Bulldogs have outscored opponents 111–34. The stretch began with a dominant 35–10 win over No. 10 Texas (8–3). Quarterback Gunner Stockton is a legitimate Heisman contender, and under offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, the offense is operating at full speed. For the 2025 season, Georgia is averaging 33.7 points per game.

Even with that level of production, some still don’t view the Bulldogs as true championship contenders.

During Wednesday’s edition of “Chuck and Chernoff” on Atlanta’s 680 The Fan, SEC radio personality Chuck Oliver made his stance on Georgia clear. He doesn’t think the Bulldogs are good enough to advance in the College Football Playoff.

To open the segment, co-host Matt Chernoff said, “Chuck says Georgia doesn’t make the cut when it comes to the SEC advancing in the playoff.”

Oliver confirmed his stance:

“No. Yeah, at least by a metric that is pretty good to figure out one side of the ball in. An offense, the approach, the OC, the receiver room, the QB, whatever. Is it built for chunk plays and tempo or is it built for possession grinding?” the radio host said.

“I think of all five teams that are making the playoffs from the SEC, the only two that are really different on offense is A&M and Ole Miss, and the Georgia shortcoming is I don’t think they can grind out possessions. I don’t think when they’re up 6 with 6 minutes left — I think the other team gets the ball back.”

Oliver continued, “You’ve seen them run the ball this year. They don’t strike me as a team that can, against a top-caliber defense — we’re going to keep the possession here, you ain’t getting it back. A&M can do that and Ole Miss can do that.”

Can’t imagine this quote doesn’t make it directly to the bulletin board one way or another.
