South Carolina’s late recruiting efforts weren’t enough for Marlon Character to waver on his commitment to Auburn.
On Wednesday, the three-star safety officially signed with the Tigers.
Character officially visited both South Carolina and Auburn in the weeks leading up to National Signing Day. Following his return trip to Columbia, S.C., Character told SEC Country the Gamecocks had a chance to land his commitment following a stellar visit.
“They still have a chance,”Character said following the visit. “They showed me some things and told me some things that were some key points with the stability that they’re having with coach Muschamp being there, possibly, for a guaranteed five years and all the coaches pretty much staying there. You know, they can’t go down with this movement. The only way is up for the program.”
But according to his father, Marlon, Sr., his son didn’t leave South Carolina feeling as if the program was an absolute fit. Back-to-back visits to Auburn, however, sold Character and his family.
“He liked (South Carolina), but I don’t think it was complete,” his father recently told SEC Country. “I don’t think he was like, ‘This is for me.’ But coming out of Auburn, he was like, ‘This is where I want to go to school.’”
Character is rated as the No. 18 safety in the country.
