Auburn baseball has a tough matchup ahead of it Wednesday night in the second round of the SEC Baseball Tournament. But the Tigers shouldn’t feel too overmatched — after all, they did something to Florida that no one else did in the 2017 regular season.
No. 8-seed Auburn swept No. 1-seed Florida to open SEC play in March. Now, two months later, they’ll meet again to cap the second day of the SEC Baseball Tournament in Hoover, Ala.
The two programs swapped directions toward the end of the regular season. Auburn dropped 10 of its final 14 games, while Florida has only lost twice since mid-April.
However, the Tigers turned things around in the last week. They snapped a six-game losing streak by taking two of three against Ole Miss. On Monday night, they eliminated the Rebels in the opening round of the SEC Tournament with a tight 5-4 victory.
Auburn recorded 11 hits in the win over Ole Miss, with seven different Tigers recording a hit. Catcher Blake Logan hit a crucial home run, while center fielder Jonah Todd and shortstop Will Holland each clubbed RBI extra-base hits.
That kind of offensive production is going to be key for the Tigers against Florida. The Gators have scored double-digit runs in four of their last seven games, including a pair against an Alabama team that swept Auburn.
Auburn’s win over Ole Miss guaranteed at least two more games in the SEC Tournament, which switches to a double-elimination format between the quarterfinals and the semifinals. Auburn missed out on a trip to Hoover in 2016, and it’s looking for its first multi-win appearance in the conference tourney since 2003.
