Auburn basketball center Austin Wiley played just six first-half minutes for John Calipari’s Team USA in a FIBA U19 World Cup rout of Iran on Saturday. But that didn’t deter the rising sophomore.
The United States soundly defeated Iran, 108-48, in its opening group game of the international tournament. Though the Auburn center was called for a couple of fouls early in the second quarter, he still finished with 8 rebounds and 5 points. All of the points and half the rebounds came in the second half. His plus-minus rating of +33 tied for second-best on the team behind 5-star forward Cameron Reddish.
Wiley’s rebound total was second behind UNLV’s Brandon McCoy, who had 10.
The Americans will face Angola on Sunday afternoon in their second Group D game in Egypt.
