In the wake of Bruce Pearl’s contract extension, Auburn athletic director Allen Greene confirmed on Friday that assistant men’s basketball coaches Chad Prewett and Steven Pearl, the coach’s son, will “absolutely” be retained, according to AL.com’s James Crepea.
“There’s formalities,” Greene said, via Crepea. “They knew and we all knew that we were working to get our program in a really strong position.”
According to the website, Pearl’s assistants were confident they would be offered new contracts, despite Greene being noncommittal during the SEC meetings last week. As the meetings were going on, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman filed a superseding indictment in the Southern District of New York against former assistant Chuck Person that resulted in zero charges against the rest of the staff.
Prewett served as Auburn’s interim assistant coach and director of basketball operations last season after joining the program in June 2014.
Pearl, who played for his father at Tennessee, was promoted to assistant coach in April 2017 after spending his first three seasons with the Tigers working as an assistant strength and conditioning coach and later as director of basketball operations.
