AUBURN, Ala. — Chuma Okeke, Bruce Pearl and perhaps most importantly Auburn basketball fans can breathe a deep sigh of relief.
The incoming freshman left Team USA camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., early to undergo further evaluation on his left knee after suffering an injury.
The Auburn head coach told SEC Country on Saturday morning Okeke is dealing with a bone bruise and will miss 1-2 weeks. Auburn Undercover’s Michael Niziolek was the first to report injury update news. The Tigers are headed to Italy for a foreign trip in early August, meaning Okeke will be available during that time.
Okeke, along with teammate Austin Wiley, put on a striking show among the nation’s best players last week.
Wiley eventually made the final cut and will again represent the United States in Cairo, Egypt later this summer. And though Okeke didn’t make the final roster it looked like he had a good shot to. Confidence, however, might be the underclassmen’s greatest takeaway from the experience.
“It helped build my confidence a lot,” Okeke told SEC Country’s Kyle Tucker earlier this week. “Coming in here really unknown and now most of the people know me.”
