Auburn coach Gus Mazlahn had to find a new defensive coordinator at the end of last season, and now it’s back to the drawing board after Will Muschamp was officially announced as the new head coach at South Carolina.
“I really appreciate coach Muschamp’s hard work and dedication for our program at Auburn this past year and wish him nothing but the best with his new job,” Malzahn said in a statement. “I will begin a search immediately for our next defensive coordinator.”
Auburn’s defense went from 66th in total defense last season to 90th this year, but the defense improved under Muschamp as the season progressed. But now a new coordinator will have to harness the momentum Auburn built towards the end of the regular season.
The new defensive signal-caller will be Auburn’s third in as many seasons and the fifth in six years. This is an important hire for Malzahn, who could be on the hot seat after Auburn stumbled to a 6-6 record this season. The offense posted some of its lowest numbers of Malzahn’s tenure, while struggling to gain explosive plays.
Auburn will close out this season against Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 30.
