Even after the regular season ended Saturday with an SEC Championship Game that Auburn lost, the coaching carousel continued to move on Sunday.
Brandon Marcello of 247 Sports first reported Sunday afternoon that the Tigers agreed to a contract extension with coach Gus Malzahn. It was later reported that the new details of that contract would include a handsome raise.
Later Sunday night, Auburn made it official that an agreement has been reached.
Auburn University confirmed Sunday the two sides “agreed to the broad outlines of a new contract extending his leadership of the Tigers,” according to a university spokesperson.
“Strength and stability go hand in hand, and we have both in Coach Malzahn,” Auburn president Steven Leath said in a statement. “We’re excited for the future of Auburn football. This means a lot to the Auburn family.”
Malzahn recently led the Tigers to an Iron Bowl victory and his team will play Central Florida in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl back in Atlanta on New Year’s Day.
