Florida (6-0, 4-0 SEC) announced starting quarterback Will Grier will be suspended indefinitely on Monday, and the news will have massive effects on the SEC East division race. Florida’s game against LSU on Saturday also impact the SEC West standings.
“I needed Florida to beat Lsu (sic) this weekend…,” Auburn senior defensive back Jonathan Jones tweeted after the suspension was announced.
Auburn (3-2, 0-2 SEC) is looking up at the rest of the teams in the SEC West, with LSU (5-0, 3-0 SEC) leading the way. Auburn needs some major help to get back in contention for the division, and a Florida win over LSU would aid that cause.
Auburn would lose any tiebreaker in the division to LSU because of an ugly 45-21 defeat in Week 3. Jones doesn’t seem to have faith that Florida can pull off the win with its backup quarterback.
Grier leads the SEC in completion percentage (65.8) and threw 10 touchdowns during Florida’s 6-0 start. He will be replaced by sophomore quarterback Treon Harris. Harris is more of a running threat than Grier, but Harris completed just 49.6 percent of his passes for nine touchdowns and four interceptions in nine games last season.
Auburn will play Kentucky on Thursday night in a game that the Tigers must win to keep their fading division hopes alive. Kentucky is second in the SEC East behind Florida, so it will be a contest between two programs needing a big win.
