AUBURN, Ala. — Over the last two weeks, SEC Country has broken down the 2017 Auburn football team position-by-position around this theme — there’s one big reason to be confident and there’s one big reason for caution.
From the new-look quarterback position to both sides of deep lines and the highly touted specialists, the previews are done. And before the Tigers head to the unofficial start of football season next week at SEC Media Days, we want to see where Auburn fans stand heading into the fall.
For those who need a refresher, here is each part of our Confidence vs. Caution series:
Auburn most likely will enter the 2017 season projected as the SEC’s second-best team. Some outlets consider the Tigers dark-horse contenders for the conference title and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Gus Malzahn revamped his offense this offseason with a new coordinator in Chip Lindsey and a presumptive new starting quarterback in Jarrett Stidham. Those two inherit the SEC’s top rushing attack with Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson, young playmakers and a veteran line. On the defensive side, Auburn has a great chance to build off the surprising successes of its 2016 campaign.
But Auburn has some depth issues at key positions, especially in the secondary. Then there’s the schedule, which includes matchups against the teams that played for the national title — again — and three consecutive SEC road games.
Malzahn sounds confident about his team heading into a defining 2017 campaign. Another season of late disappointment and zero wins against Auburn’s top two rivals won’t go over well. But the pieces are in place for double-digit wins that could erase all hot-seat talk on the Plains.
