Auburn football: Back to the grind, season wishes, the Plains makes the Princeton cut
Welcome to SEC Country’s daily War Eagle Wakeup, a rundown of everything happening in Auburn football and Auburn Tigers athletics with Lauren Shute. Here’s a look at what you might have missed on Friday and over the weekend:
Just like that, it’s football season.
The first practice of preseason camp went smoothly for Auburn. Coach Gus Malzahn is calm and confident, players are excited and there’s a lot happening for Auburn football.
It’s typical that players stay off social media during football season (and that is probably coming for many), but some student-athletes expressed their elation and hopes for the year on Twitter. Here’s a look at a few thoughts from standout players:
Football season is here! Fall camp…go time! #WarEagle

The Plains is the place to be
Of course, it’s easy to spend time at practice when you have some of the nation’s best facilities. That’s exactly what the Princeton Review said about Auburn in its rankings released online on Monday.
Auburn ranked No. 1 in the athletic facilities category, followed by Kansas State and Grinnell College at No. 3.
In other Auburn football news:
- Senior wide receiver Jason Smith made another position change for the Tigers.
- Auburn freshman signee Carlito Gonzalez not listed on roster for start of fall camp.
- Auburn football will decide on its starting quarterback without tackling (or going live) this August.
- Defensive back Michael Sherwood will grad transfer from Auburn.
Tweet of the day
A lot is going to happen in the coming weeks on the Plains, but some of the best info that came out of the team’s practice Monday?
Handshakes are going to be insane this season. Take a special lesson from Kyle Davis and Sal Cannella toward the end of the clip.
Good news for all you serious football Auburn fans out there: the handshakes this year are intense. pic.twitter.com/gCYis08AFC
