Auburn football: A behind the scenes look, message from coach Bruce Pearl
Welcome to SEC Country’s daily War Eagle Wakeup, a rundown of everything happening in Auburn football and Auburn Tigers athletics with Lauren Shute. Here’s a look at what you might have missed Friday and over the weekend:
Behind the scenes
Auburn football finished another day of practice Tuesday, but this time it was closed (media wasn’t allowed).
Fortunately, the official Auburn Twitter account offered a behind the scenes look at what went on in the Auburn Athletics Complex.
Typically the first few days include a lot of base install and teaching. The first real day of action will be Saturday when Auburn transitions from shorts and helmets to full pads.

In other Auburn football news:
- The Auburn football defense is eager for another momentous year under Kevin Steele.
- Gus Malzahn wants Auburn’s offensive position battles settled by the two-week mark of preseason camp.
- Tre’ Williams says Auburn “is going to play” young linebackers this season.
- Auburn’s defensive leader Tray Matthews sees a lot of himself in “fiesty” freshman Traivon Leonard.
Tweet of the day
Bruce Pearl has been confident about what Auburn basketball could do in the coming hoops season. And though it’s months away, the head coach has reason to be pumped.
Whether it’s a strong incoming class, a young group of talented returners or the hype surrounding the Tigers, there’s been a lot going on even as football season nears. And that doesn’t begin to cover big man Austin Wiley and the show he’s put on this summer while spending time with the U19 FIBA team.
Auburn is headed to Italy on Aug. 6, where the team will take in history, culture and of course, plenty of Italian food.
In the midst of so much positive, Pearl and his squad might have extra motivation. ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas released his list of top players for the 2018 season, but Bilas skipped Auburn players.
And coach Pearl had a message for the basketball expert.

On paper, the Tigers have a core group of athletes who will have a chance to do something special next season. And that’s coming after a momentous year for SEC basketball.
So will Pearl prove Mr. Bilas wrong? Can Austin Wiley or any of Auburn’s other standouts continue garnering attention. It seems like a possibility — so stay tuned, indeed.
