Auburn football: Auburn family’s newest member; more SEC honors for AU softball

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily War Eagle Wakeup, a rundown of everything happening in Auburn football and Auburn Tigers athletics with Lauren Shute. Today, we discuss the newest member of the Auburn family and the latest softball honoree.

Auburn family adds a member

Cam Newton and his girlfriend delivered a daughter back in February, but Newton didn’t reveal his daughter’s name until earlier this week.

The former Auburn quarterback, who has a son named Chosen Sebastian Newton, decided to name his daughter Sovereign-Dior Cambella Newton.

Newton posted the photo below to his Instagram account earlier this week, so now Auburn fans know the name of their most recent addition.

Happening on the Plains

Weather strikes again

Auburn’s softball game against Samford has been canceled due to a severe weather warning. There are no plans to reschedule the nonconference matchup.

Big weekend for Wallace

Junior Carlee Wallace was named the SEC Player of the Week on Tuesday morning. She’s the second player (the other being Haley Fagan) who’s snagged the award this season.

In Auburn’s first-ever sweep of Georgia in Athens, Wallace recorded a batting average of .538 through three games. She was perfect (4 for 4) when leading off an inning and reached base 9 out of 15 times.

Wallace almost hit for the cycle in the Tigers’ Saturday win (single, triple and a home run) and produced a 1.000 slugging percentage.

The catcher was instrumental in Auburn’s wins and, as a result, helped her team climb to No. 5 in the polls.

Auburn baseball gets stung

The Tigers were looking for a big win against Georgia Tech on Tuesday night at Plainsman Park.

The visiting Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, but Auburn responded with a season-high-tying eight runs in the third to take an 8-5 lead. Luke Jarvis had 2 hits in the inning, Daniel Robert recorded 2 runs and Conor Davis walked with the bases loaded for another run.

Sophomore catcher Mike Rojas drilled a three-run double (the first of his career) to help Auburn regain the lead.

Unfortunately, Auburn couldn’t hang on to the cushion, falling to Georgia Tech by three runs.

Butch Thompson’s team travels to College Station, Texas, this weekend for a three-game series at Texas A&M.
