Auburn football senior kicker Daniel Carlson could make history this fall, and those in charge of the Groza Award are already giving him a ton of spotlight.
The Groza Award named Carlson to its 2017 preseason watch list Wednesday morning. The release from the Palm Beach County Sports Commission states Carlson “headlines” the 30-player list, as he could become the first player in college football history to be named a finalist three times.
Carlson was named to the final three for the award in both 2015 and 2016. He was denied both times, but he returned to Auburn as the national favorite to win the Groza in 2017.
Carlson’s 69 field goals is the most by any active kicker in college football, and he hasn’t missed a single extra-point attempt in his career. The Colorado native, who will represent the program at SEC Media Days on Thursday, already own several career records at Auburn.
The Auburn kicker is one of five watch list members from the SEC, joining Florida’s Eddy Pineiro, Kentucky’s Austin MacGinnis, Vanderbilt’s Tommy Openshaw and Ole Miss’ Gary Wunderlich.
