Former Auburn kicker Daniel Carlson produced a quote that’s sure to fire up the Tigers’ rivalry with Alabama.
Speaking on The Paul Finebaum Show on Tuesday, Carlson said the Tigers are “state champs” when answering Finebaum’s reference to Alabama’s White House visit to celebrate the Crimson Tide’s most recent national title. The Crimson Tide beat Georgia for the championship in January despite not winning the SEC West. The Tigers topped Alabama 26-14 in November to clinch a spot in the SEC Championship Game, and they later lost to Georgia in Atlanta. Auburn closed the season with a 10-4 record after losing to UCF in the Peach Bowl in January.
“Yeah, they might be national champs,” Carlson told Finebaum. “But I tell you, we’re state champs. So we’ll take what we can get.”
Later, Carlson claimed that he was cracking a joke with the comment.
Former Alabama linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton had a strong response.
This is why the Iron Bowl is one of college football’s greatest rivalries. Kudos to you, Carlson, for adding a little spice to the offseason with this comment. Well done.
