Auburn football: The schedule is set, winning softball gold for Team USA

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily War Eagle Wakeup, a rundown of everything happening in Auburn football and Auburn Tigers athletics with Lauren Shute. Here’s a look at what you might have missed on Friday and over the weekend:

The beginning

Football season is right around the corner. No really.

Auburn fans have been struggling since January as the anticipation has been building for the 2017 season. It all starts Monday when coach Gus Malzahn’s team has its first preseason practice.

The Tigers sports information staff released the media availability schedule for the initial three weeks. Reporters and photographers will be allowed to watch the beginning of practice — and it’s probably going to include a lot of stretching.

Gold for Alyssa Rivera

There’s been lots of chatter about Auburn basketball star Austin Wiley’s international experience this summer, but Bruce Pearl’s team isn’t the only group of athletics becoming more worldly.

Softball star Alyssa Rivera joined Team USA at the eight-nation WBSC Junior Women’s World Championship in Clearwater, Fla. Even better, she’s bringing home a gold medal after the U.S. beat Japan 13-4 in the championship game on Sunday.

Tweet of the day

Auburn wide receiver Will Hastings gets a lot of grief.

A lot of it comes from senior kicker Daniel Carlson. Hastings was a kicker before making the move to wideout. Carlson is of course thrilled for Hastings, but he sometimes pokes fun at the Little Rock, Ark., native and acts like he’s been big timed.

There was a great example of this on Sunday, when Hastings celebrated his birthday.
