Auburn football: Flashback to championship No. 1, Carlson gets another nod

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily War Eagle Wakeup, a rundown of everything happening in Auburn football and Auburn Tigers athletics with Lauren Shute. Here’s a look at what you might have missed on Tuesday.

Flashback to championship No. 1

There’s that word again.

“Championship” has been — and continues to be — thrown out when Auburn football has been the topic of discussion. It was again Tuesday for a different reason.

The 2017 season will commemorate the 1957 team — and the very first football national title that was won on the Plains. Staff in the Auburn athletic department went back into the archives and found never-before-seen footage of the 1957 squad.

So while Auburn fans are dreaming of titles and preparing for the fall, they still can reflect on other championship days.

Another invitee

The name of senior kicker Daniel Carlson keeps being booted around.

Carlson, who headlined the Lou Groza Award watch list, also was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list on Tuesday. The Lou Groza Award is given to the nation’s top placekicker each year. The Wuerffel Trophy goes to the player who “best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement,” according to the NCAA.

Again, Carlson is just one of several Tigers who have been named to various watch lists this preseason.

Tweet of the Day

If having a meal with Herb Hand isn’t on your bucket list. it probably should be.

The play of Hand’s offensive line will be a determining factor in the Tigers’ success in 2017. He’s preparing his group well, though, as evidenced by a Tuesday Tweet.

This is likely the first of several food-themed Tweets Hand will post throughout preseason camp.

And now it’s time for breakfast.
