Auburn football: We’re coming home, softball makes a hire, soccer starts SEC play

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

We’re coming home

At the beginning of the season Auburn’s meeting with Mercer seemed like it would be a total cupcake game.

It still kind of is, but after Auburn’s loss at Clemson it’s also a little more important. The Tigers need to have a strong showing — particularly on offense. Kevin Steele’s defense needs to continue to dominate and keep the pressure off coach Gus Malzahn’s offense.

Mercer is an FCS team that Auburn should have no problem defeating. The day game atmosphere won’t be as exciting as a nighttime SEC game, but it will still be another football weekend on the Plains.

Auburn hires softball coach

After months of not so great softball news, there was some good news on Thursday evening.

Mickey Dean, the former coach at James Madison, was named Auburn’s softball coach.

Dean has coached at the collegiate level for 11 years and has led seven NCAA Tournament teams. He’s also added nine conference championships and is regarded as one of the elite coaches in the country.

His résumé is lengthy and means one thing: Auburn softball is headed in the right direction again after some turns and twists.

Soccer starts SEC play

Auburn soccer will welcome No. 22 Texas A&M to the Plains on Friday to kick off SEC play. Opening kick is set for 6:30 p.m. CT at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

The Tigers and the Aggies have previously met seven times and A&M currently holds a 5-2-0 advantage. Auburn will try to shake that up Friday.
