There was a time when Zeke Pike was considered the heir apparent to Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton at Auburn. One of the top recruits in the country, Pike had all the talent in the world: size, arm strength, athleticism, you name it.
But despite those prodigious gifts, Pike never took a snap for the Tigers, as his career was marred by off-field issues. In a profile for Sports Illustrated, Pike has the opportunity to explain what happened during his time on the Plains, how his life spiraled out of control after leaving school, and how he’s trying to put himself back together after suffering through addiction and suicidal thoughts.
Though he’ll never be the player many thought he would be coming out of high school, it does look as though Pike is making a conscious effort to make himself a better person, getting himself clean and telling his story to high school players across the country. For as sad a story as Pike’s college career was, it looks like his impact on the football world can still have a happy ending.
