Auburn football: Lots of good news on The Plains

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

UT’s coaching search over

Tennessee’s search for a coach has reportedly come to an end.

The good news for Auburn fans is that Kevin Steele, who was in the mix of final candidates, isn’t going to be singing Rocky Top in orange anytime soon.

Auburn’s defensive coordinator, who has proven to be one of Gus Malzahn’s best hires, should return to coach Auburn football for a third season. As good as Steele’s defense was in his first season, it was even better in Year 2. That trend doesn’t seem like it will be changing in the near future.

The big 3

Running back Kerryon Johnson, offensive guard Braden Smith and kicker Daniel Carlson were all honored with Player of the Year awards by the SEC on Wednesday.

Johnson was named the Offensive Player of the Year, while Smith was awarded the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. Carlson closed things out by being named the Special Teams Player of the Year.

Basketball earns a W

Auburn basketball earned its seventh win of the season against Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night without standout guard Mustapha Heron.

Desean Murray and Anfernee McLemore led the way for the Tigers, who jumped ahead of the Runnin’ Bulldogs and never really slowed down. Even when Heron left the game in the first half with back spasms, Auburn held on to its intensity. McLemore notched 6 more blocks in addition to his 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday when they play UAB in Auburn Arena.

Tweet of the day
