Auburn football: Signing Day successes precede home heartbreaker

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

How to have a successful National Signing Day

Signing Day was relatively quiet for coach Gus Malzahn and Auburn football on Wednesday — and that wasn’t a bad thing.

Overall, the Tigers dealt with a couple of misses (wide receiver Justyn Ross is headed to Clemson and Auburn didn’t sign another offensive lineman), but nothing too unexpected happened.

Malzahn doesn’t offer praise easily, but he had quite a bit to say about all of his new speedy, athletic players. If you somehow missed all the Signing Day highlights, be sure to catch up on the most recent additions to the squad.

Basketball falls to Aggies

Wednesday wasn’t as great for Auburn basketball.

The Tigers fought hard but ended up losing to Texas A&M by one point in Auburn Arena. It was a strange game where Bruce Pearl’s team was down by 17 in the second half, kept fighting and still had a shot at a win (despite a couple of foul calls and extra long reviews).

Junior guard Bryce Brown sustained a strained shoulder attempting a dunk (it will be evaluated on Thursday) and didn’t see much time at all in the second half. It was a rough night for Auburn, but Pearl’s team will get a chance to turn things around Saturday in Athens.

Tweet of the day

Win or lose, can somebody please give Malik Dunbar an award for being the best hype man ever already?

Or maybe someone else is trying to get in on the hype man action …
