CBS Sports puts Auburn football in top 10 of its preseason ranking of all 130 FBS teams

The top of the preseason CBS Sports 130 features a lot of teams that finished 2016 on a high note — except for the notable exception of Auburn football.

On Tuesday morning, the national outlet released the preseason version of its CBS Sports 130, which is a weekly ranking of every single team in the FBS. According to the site, the ranking is a composite ranking of ballots from writers across CBS Sports and the 247Sports network.

Auburn came it at No. 9 in the rankings, which is four spots ahead of where it was on the preseason coaches poll last week. The Tigers finished last season at No. 22 in the CBS Sports 130.

“Outside of a surging belief in Auburn (No. 9), you’ll see a top-10 that looks very similar to the way things finished at the end of the 2016 season,” Chip Patterson of CBS Sports wrote Tuesday.

CBS Sports, along with ESPN, is higher than most outlets on the Tigers, who are coming off an 8-5 season that featured three losses in their final four games. A lot of the buzz around Gus Malzahn’s team stems from the arrival of former Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham.

At No. 9, Auburn is the second-highest team in the SEC behind No. 1 Alabama. LSU (No. 12), Georgia (No. 15) and Florida (No. 16) round out the conference’s top 25 representatives. Auburn’s Week 2 opponent, defending national champion Clemson, is No. 6 in the CBS Sports 130.
