2. Kamryn Pettway
Why he’s here: The coolest thing about Pettway landing on the list of Auburn football top players is that he never was expected to be on it. The sophomore started the season behind Kerryon Johnson after switching from H-back to running back during the offseason.
Pettway didn’t have any carries against Clemson in Auburn’s home opener. He recorded 152 yards on 15 attempts against Arkansas State and amassed 123 yards against Texas A&M.
More striking than his numbers was his style. The 6-foot, 240-pound back showed flashes of quickness and the ability to bulldoze any defender in his way. And with that, Pettway started turning heads.

“To have a downhill, physical guy, when he gets to the second level, people don’t want to get near him,” Auburn football coach Gus Malzahn said. “They’re going low. You all noticed that last week. We had our first real scrimmage in fall camp; that’s when I think we kinda knew he had that ability. He had some runs similar to what you’ve seen, and so that gave us confidence that it would carry over to the game, and obviously he’s been a big spark for us.”

Pettway suffered a left leg injury on his longest and final run against Vanderbilt. His absence was devastating for Auburn in its games in Athens and Tuscaloosa (though he tried to play against Alabama).
Season stats: Here’s a look at Pettway’s regular-season stats. The running back played in nine games.
Next season: Pettway said he wanted to return to Auburn to get his degree and play a full, healthy season.
Though the running back won’t be a secret anymore, he’ll still be a force.
For all of the Auburn fans asking I will be back next season. I have some unfinished business!

Fellow back Johnson may have been the happiest about Pettway’s return. He did a nice job of summing up what the duo could achieve in a full season together.
“I was very happy. I was extremely happy. I mean, I can’t even think of what we’ll be able to do,” Johnson said. “It’s going to be hard to beat me and him as a one-two punch in the SEC and the country. I think we can, fully healthy, it’s scary to think about.”
