Auburn will have a new, but familiar offensive line coach in 2018.

Auburn football: Welcoming old friends back home

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Welcoming back a familiar face

Auburn’s offensive line dominated in 2013 and the years that followed, and at least in part, that was a credit to coaching.

Gus Malzahn and his staff will welcome J.B. Grimes, who helped Auburn become the first program in SEC history to lead the nation in rushing, back to The Plains in 2018. Grimes will replace Herb Hand, who resigned earlier this week to take the OC job at Texas.

Grimes has a reputation of being a “tremendous” teacher, which is exactly what Auburn’s young offensive line will need to compete in ’18.

And another one …

Football wasn’t the only sport that welcomed home a successful member on Wednesday.

Auburn softball coach Mickey Dean named Emily Carosone its volunteer assistant coach. Carosone was a NFCA All-American, as well as an All-SEC star. She’s the Tigers’ all-time leader in hits (285), career batting average (.406) and on-base average (.534).

Tough night in Tuscaloosa

Alabama snapped Auburn basketball’s 14-game win streak on Wednesday night.

Bruce Pearl’s team got off to a sloppy start and never fully recovered, while Crimson Tide guard John Petty lit up Coleman Coliseum (27 points, 8 for 13 3-point field goals).

Not a lot went right for the Tigers, but here’s a look at what did in the 5-point loss. Auburn returns to The Plains this Saturday for a matchup against Georgia.
