AUBURN, Ala. — A few games into the season, Auburn’s Gus Malzahn handed play calling duties over to offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.
Now he’s on a list of 18 coaches on the mid-season watch list for the Dodd Trophy awarded to the nation’s top coach.
Jim Terry, the chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation, said in a statement: “We are at the midpoint of the college football season and in our opinion, these 18 head coaches have separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Whether it is their current on-field success, high academic standing or community involvement, these are the coaches who have best represented what the Dodd Trophy is all about.”
Other coaches from the SEC on the list include Florida’s Jim McElwain, Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin and Alabama’s Nick Saban. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, who Auburn faced in its home opener was also on the list.
