AUBURN, Ala. — The position battle everyone has been worried about is finally over: Kevin Phillips will be Auburn’s starting punter this season.
All jokes aside, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn sprinkled in the punting news shortly after announcing sophomore Sean White as the starting quarterback. Phillips competed with Ian Shannon for the lead punter role and won the job as of Thursday.
“Our starting punter is going to be Kevin Phillips,” Malzahn said. “Of course, he started last year. He was in a good battle with Ian Shannon, and Ian really made it very competitive. But we decided to make a call with that.”
Shannon might still see some punting chances in 2016.
“He’s an outstanding punter; he’s also an outstanding kicker,” Malzahn said.
Phillips averaged 41 yards per punt last season, including 17 punts pinned inside the 20-yard line.
