Auburn’s game at Mississippi State on Saturday will bring together some former Netflix stars.
Auburn QB John Franklin III, one of the main characters from the Netflix documentary series ‘Last Chance U,’ will get some support from his former academic advisor at East Mississippi Community College, Brittany Wagner, according to 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello. The quarterback who started ahead of Franklin at EMCC, Wyatt Roberts, will also be at the game as a member of the Missisippi State football team.
Wagner will wear Franklin’s No. 5 EMCC jersey for the game. She said she and Franklin communicate often via text and Snapchat.
“Every time we communicate it’s just been little jokes or jabs at East Mississippi stuff, or on his birthday I called him,” Wagner said. “I’m assuming he’s doing good and fighting every day. I haven’t talked to him about football. I’m really excited to see him.”
Franklin wasn’t able to beat out Roberts for the starting job at EMCC. However, he earned an offer from Auburn after he stepped in during the team’s season finale against Mississippi Delta when Roberts went down with an injury. He was 10-of-16 passing for 119 yards and a touchdown in the 48-0 win. He also ran the ball 10 times for 172 yards and five touchdowns.
Roberts recently got engaged. Despite saying his football career was over after his final season at EMCC, he decided to walk on at Mississippi State. He will not play Saturday while he sits out the season as a redshirt player.
“I was surprised that he walked on. Wyatt is a true competitor,” Franklin said. “We pushed each other so hard. He stepped his game up tremendously when I got there at East Mississippi last season. Ultimately that’s why he won the starting job, because he didn’t mess up to give me a chance to capitalize. I credit him for that. He’s just a real competitor.”
