Auburn linebackers coach Lance Thompson will serve as the team’s interim defensive coordinator for the Birmingham Bowl.
Thompson will replace Will Muschamp, who left Auburn after one season to become South Carolina’s head coach.
“He’s familiar with our defense, he’s a veteran guy and these guys will work very closely together,” coach Gus Malzahn said on Monday according to AL.com’s Brandon Marcello. “That had a lot to do with it.”
Thompson has been with Auburn for just one season but has experience as a defensive coordinator. He was the defensive coordinator at Central Florida from 2004-06.
The Tigers will use a couple of graduate assistants to fortify their coaching staff in the bowl game, according to Marcello. Travis Williams will handle coaching the linebackers while Blake Gideon will run the secondary.
Auburn’s makeshift defensive staff will face Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 30.
