For the first time in two cycles, a prospect has de-committed from Auburn.
Saraland (Ala.) cornerback Cordale Flott officially visited LSU over the weekend. On Sunday, he flipped his commitment from Auburn to LSU, he confirmed to SEC Country. It moves Auburn back to 11 commitments in the 2019 class.
Flott originally committed to Auburn on April 17, but he made it clear his recruitment wasn’t likely complete.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound cornerback has visited Auburn multiple times since his commitment. In the months since Flott’s pledge, however, Auburn’s cornerback board has started to take better shape. It had become clear the Tigers — who didn’t have a cornerback commitment at the time of Flott’s commitment — were in play for a few more elite cornerback targets from outside the state.
Auburn landed St. Simons Island, Ga., cornerback target Jaylin Simpson two weeks later. From there, Andrew Booth, Zion Puckett and Adonis Otey have emerged as prime cornerback targets. Auburn also feels as though it’s still in play for Alabama cornerback commit Christian Williams from Daphne, Ala. Another in-state cornerback, Nehemiah Pritchett, has emerged as one of the Tigers’ newest rising targets, as well.
The direction of that cornerback board softens the blow of Flott’s flip to LSU.
Auburn planned to take three cornerbacks in the 2019 class. Simpson fills one of those holes. Flott’s decision allows the addition of two more of those elite cornerbacks in this Tigers class.
Flott ranks as the nation’s No. 51 cornerback and No. 600 overall prospect.
My take: This should be considered a mutual parting of ways, something that’s been in the works for a few weeks now.
Auburn is in the market for a few cornerback targets it views higher on its board. Flott, who I’ve been told had an exceptional showing at LSU’s camp — and many on the Auburn staff still really like — had other great choices. LSU became Flott’s clear top choice, and even though those Tigers already have several other cornerbacks on board, they were willing to take the Mobile, Ala., cornerback right away.
Look for Auburn to still add two or three more cornerbacks in this class, depending on the elite status of who decides to commit.
