Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Auburn Tigers football recruiting notebook with Auburn recruiting beat writer Benjamin Wolk. It’s Friday, and SEC Country looks at wide receiver option Tommy Bush and an interesting move by Ohio State.
Update on 2 key Auburn wide receiver targets
Two wide receivers have been the focus of Auburn’s recruiting going forward — 4-stars Justyn Ross and Anthony Schwartz.
Ross and Schwartz are the top-2 options for the Tigers, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t covering their bases. Schwartz has considered expediting his process. He may take his official visit next weekend, which would be a major shift for him.
One prospect, in particular, has been mentioned in this space from time to time despite being one of the more down-the-line candidates to land in Auburn’s class. That’s 4-star wide receiver Tommy Bush from Schertz, Texas.
Bush has only visited Auburn once this year, so he has seemed like a long shot to land in the Tigers’ class. But the Bush family is handling the process methodically. Bush has been patient setting up official visits (already gone to Nebraska and Michigan State), and he will take his third this weekend to Georgia.
According to Bush, Auburn has stayed in contact, as well.
“Coach [Kodi] Burns checks in on me quite regularly. He said [earlier this week] that he was heading down to visit us next week,” Bush told SEC Country. “Really enjoyed our visit there this summer and can’t wait to see what Coach Burns tells me.”
Bush might be labeled as a backup plan because of the prioritization of Ross and Schwartz. With that said, Bush brings a special skill set of his own. He’s 6-foot-5 and 191 pounds, which makes him a similar type of prospect to Ross and Seth Williams. Bush also carries himself with a maturity level unmatched by many prospects in the 2018 class.
Again, see this as a secondary option for the Tigers, but a good secondary option to have.
Importance of an Ohio State recruiting move
This time of year, it’s almost as important to watch what other big programs are doing as it is to follow your favorite team. Recruiting is crazy, and we’re at the time of year when every top program is analyzing their remaining targets and trying to determine who/how the final spots will fill. That’s why, sometimes, the moves other programs make can be a strong indication of other dominoes to fall.
Ohio State played that role Thursday night.
The Buckeyes landed an important commitment from 3-star quarterback Matthew Baldwin, who was previously committed to Colorado State.
Why should Auburn fans care about Baldwin?
It shows Ohio State has uneasiness about the commitment of 4-star quarterback Emory Jones. Jones took to Twitter immediately after the Baldwin commitment to express his (let’s say) curiosity about the move.
As I’ve written in the past, my sources are telling me Jones ends up at Auburn or Alabama. Despite his Buckeyes commitment, I’ve had one source tell me specifically they can’t see Jones sticking with Ohio State despite what Jones told SEC Country recently.
Nothing has changed yet, but the Baldwin decision should set the tone for a potential Iron Bowl quarterback battle to come.
