In a big year for Bruce Pearl and the Auburn Tigers, they’ve got some big non-conference foes set up.
The Tigers released their non-conference schedule for the 2016-17 season. The Tigers will face at least four teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season, highlighted by a game against Oklahoma.
Auburn opens its season at home against a North Florida team that made the NCAA Tournament last year on Nov. 11. After a home games against Georgia State and Eastern Kentucky, the Tigers will travel to Cancun, Mexico to play in the Cancun Challenge. Auburn will join Texas Tech, Purdue and Utah State with Auburn opening against Texas Tech on Nov. 17.
The Tigers’ tougher games in December happen away from Auburn Arena. The Tigers will play at UAB on Dec. 3 and it will be the first time the two Alabama teams play in basketball since 1996. Then Auburn plays Boston College in the Under Armour Reunion Classic in Madison Square Garden in New York.
Auburn will play Oklahoma on Dec. 18. The Sooners, who lost to eventual champion Villanova in the Final Four last year, in the Hall of Fame’s Birthday of Basketball at the Mohegan Sun arena in Uncasville, CT. The Tigers then play at Connecticut on Dec. 23.
The Tigers non-conference schedule concludes with a game against TCU as part of the SEC/Big 12 challenge. Auburn will play at TCU on Jan. 28.
In Pearl’s second year, the Tigers went 11-20 and 5-13 in SEC play.
